In Chicago, it's almost the end of chili season, when we turn from heartier soups and chilis to lighter summer fare. In winter, this vegetarian black bean chili is one of our favorite gluten-free meals. With plenty of toasted cumin, chipotle chile powder and smoked paprika, the flavors are strong and smoky, lingering long on your tongue with a spicy spike. The gluten-free black bean chili makes a satisfying entree, accompanied by a side of gluten-free cornbread. Continue reading →

Passover, an eight-day holiday that celebrates when the Jews were freed from slavery in Egypt, seems to be a great gluten-free holiday. On Passover, we cannot eat any leavened bread -- basically, no wheat, rye, barley, spelt or oats. Sounds great so far, right? But here's the rub: On Passover, we eat matzo, which is made from wheat. Many Passover foods are made with matzo meal, so you need to read labels carefully to avoid matzo meal. Still, Passover is a great opportunity to stock up on some gluten-free foods that are hard to find year-round. Continue reading →

My daughters always have fun selling Girl Scout cookies – who can resist two enthusiastic, cute kids? I’m always so impressed that my younger daughter never complains that she can’t eat Girl Scout cookies, because they’re not gluten-free. This year, we decided to make our own gluten-free version of Tagalongs, or Peanut Butter Patties, so all of us could enjoy them. Continue reading →

Fudge seems rich and decadent, the kind of special-occasion sweet you might have during the holidays, or on a summer trip to the shore. I couldn’t believe how simple this recipe was and how many raves it elicited. Plus, fudge is the easiest gluten-free dessert ever. It has no flour, no eggs, and no special gluten-free ingredients, so just about anyone can make it for their gluten-free or egg-free guests. My kids love mint, so we made mint chip fudge. But if you’re not a fan of mint, this recipe is very easy to vary. No matter how you make it, you'll be clamoring for more. Continue reading →

Without a doubt, brownies have to be the best all-around dessert. Rich, dense and fudgy, they satisfy the cravings of any chocoholic. Plus, they're easy to make for parties, potlucks and holiday get-togethers. Most importantly -- at least as far as I'm concerned -- they are easy to make gluten-free, especially with this killer recipe for Grandma's best gluten-free brownies ever. Continue reading →

My kids love Halloween, and I do too. But there is a big Halloween hassle factor. I could do without all the extra sweets and the frustration of figuring out what candy is gluten free and what is not. Many blogs have long lists of candies that ARE gluten-free, which is extremely helpful, as you must check every piece of candy to make sure it is gluten-free. Following is my shorter list of candies that are NOT gluten-free, so you can steer your child away from selecting them from a trick-or-treat bowl.

For Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year, we greet each other with wishes for a happy and sweet new year. To symbolize sweetness, many families serve honey cake, a traditional Rosh Hashanah dessert. Which, as usual, leaves me searching for a great-tasting gluten-free alternative. Fortunately, this year I made a moist gluten-free, dairy-free honey cake for my honey-child. Continue reading →

Shanah Tovah! Best wishes for a happy Rosh Hashanah and a sweet new year. We’re getting this new year off to a tasty start, with a gluten-free version of the traditional Jewish apple cake. Apple cake is a favorite dessert on Rosh Hashanah, when we eat apples dipped in honey to symbolize hopes for a sweet new year. My mother is famous for her Jewish apple cake, laced with apples that she picks from the trees in her back yard. I’ve always been intimidated by pie crust, let alone gluten-free pie crust. So this summer I took a classic strawberry rhubarb pie and turned it into a gluten-free strawberry rhubarb crumble, with no crust and a sweet crisp topping that everyone loves. One quick substitution makes it vegan as well. Easier than pie! Continue reading →
